Case Study - Beacon Educational Technologies Inc.

Beacon Educational Technologies Inc specializes in developing software for assisting Educational Institutions in their Administration. They have a range of 6 products for the administration of Educational Institutions.

Problem Situation

Beacon Educational Technologies Inc. wanted to upgrade their technology. They were looking for a team of Software Developers to upgrade their products. This included feature enhancement, GUI modification and unifying all products to one technology, through which they can combine all products to evolve an Institution Administration Application. All these products were in use and they had to support compatibility and seamless upgrade of the existing applications without any loss of data. They were also having budgetary constraints in upgrading their products.

Solutions

RDS was granted the task of upgrading a 16 bit application to Visual Basic 6.0 and Microsoft Database as the backend. The existing application Use of Buildings 2 was Re-Engineered. New features were included, a grand new look and feel was provided, and a seamless process of Upgradation from existing application was developed. Rational Unified Process was used for the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Rational Rose was used for design of the application.

Value to the customer

The re-engineered application with a new look, new features and seamless upgrade feature was delivered on time and delivered at a cost less than 60% of conventional development. Users of the application were able to upgrade their old application to the new version and had their data intact in their new version of the software.
